A Matter of Taste

Looking at the wide range of artists people listed under their “favorite music” sparked a question I often consider but never really ask:

Can you describe the range of your musical taste in one sentence, encompassing all of the seemingly incongruent parts into one overall musical philosophy?

This can be a difficult exercise, but I think it can also reveal a lot about why you choose the music you choose and how each song, artist, or subgenre fits your character. Borrowing Alej’s great example, why would your friends find Dixie Chicks and Prince next to each other on your iPod? Why do you listen to Beethoven and Jack Johnson to fall asleep at night?

Enough of my rambling… it’s time for your opinions! :-)

i think music can and does explain an awful lot about a person, especially the music they listen to when no one is around

I agree completely, mimick. Sometimes it’s the obscure, quirky, maybe even embarrassing stuff you choose to listen to in your quietest moments that can reveal the most.

Sometimes, the Internet opens us to explore these quieter tendencies as well.

But yeah i mean the music i workout to is going to be different from the music i want to wake up to, or relax to when reading or studying, when i am out with some friends i wanna hear lame 80’s music or some songs that remind me of them. I also think some music is an acquired taste though, jazz for instance, at first it doesn’t sound right, but over time, you pick up on random things and can differentiate between songs and artist and certain tendencies. But yeah, it’s hard to imagine what life would be like without music, I’d have to say i have some sort of music going more than 50%, keeps me sane, haha

I like music that either moves my body and my heart (or both).

I can give you one word to describe my taste: CLASSIC

I love music, any and all kinds; I will listen to everything from indie to pop, classical to hard rock, basically anything that doesn’t make my ears bleed. (I might listen to that too!)

Absolutely! I don’t judge people based on their musical tastes except in one case ... if they only like ONE type of music and hate everything else. That says to me that their views are limited in other ways, too.

As for my own musical tastes, I would say “eclectic” would sum it up. I mean, just to grab a few artists out of my iTunes library, let’s see here ... Enya, Andrew Bird, Hanson, Paul Simon, The Bens (aka, Harper, Kweller, Folds, Lee, Chutz), Vince Guaraldi, Bob Dylan, Loreena McKennitt, Connor Garvey (OK that’s not fair ... he’s a friend ... but he’s fabulous), Indigo Girls, Snow Patrol, Rufus Wainwright ... OK you get the idea. Eclectic’s the word.
