I struggle with this. I sometimes feel selfish that I really don’t want Matt to become really huge.
Obviously I want him to feel success, make money making music, get his music out there to many people…
But at the same time, I *like* being able to see him in small venues and get the chance to talk to him. I *like* not having to pay crazy Ticketmaster surcharges to see a show. (To see Jack Johnson this summer it’s $150 for 3 “$29” lawn seats!!) I *like* being in a crowd that’s there to really see Matt, not just be a part of the next-big-thing.
In the past, I’ve been fans of the little fish that have become big fish and it feels like Matt could go in that direction. How do you feel? Am I the only selfish one? ;)

I know exactly what you mean, I haven’t seen him perform but when I do I don’t want expensive tickets and a huge concert hall.
But I also introduce his music to my friends/family, I think it would be cool if he became huge. We would be able to say that we liked him from the beginning and not just because he’s popular. We can’t really consider ourselves selfish because we don’t really have any control whether or not he becomes big.

yeah i just bought tickets to see matt in may, $13 each, and jack in august, i wanna say 150 for 3 also. But you know what, it’s the nature of the beast, like you said you’d love to keep him small, but at the same time you hope people find what we ahve found and come to love his music like we do. I guess the only thing you can say is if you don’t like it don’t go (but like they say, easier said then done, haha, I think the money spent will be well worth it to see jack)

yeah i don’t want to share matt’s music with the world

I really don’t care, just as long as he doesn’t become overrated and overexposed like Beyoncé. And as far as I know, his label is totally cool so, I don’t know.

There’s something great about the relationship artists are able to have with their fans when they’re still relatively unknown, and it’s something that isn’t really possible to maintain when you have a huge fanbase. To a certain degree, I feel like you can control how big your fanbase becomes (for example, you can actually make good music, which is appears fewer and fewer people like), but after a point, it’s out of your hands. Not-so-secretly, I selfishly don’t want Matt to make it big, but I wouldn’t ever really wish that someone doesn’t become successful because I feel like that would be bad karma, as the entertainment industry is sort of the area I want to get into.

First of all, I think he already is successful - he’s doing what he loves and is sharing it with a generously sized fanbase. You don’t have to be mainstream to be successful.
I’ve noticed that in the past months he’s gained in popularity, and more people have been introduced to his music. Now, I’ve come across people thinking that he’s a Jack Johnson rip-off, or a one-hit wonder (yes I’ve actually read/heard these things.) Not everyone appreciates him, and I know you can’t please everyone, and they’re entitled to their own opinion, but a couple years ago that was rare, if not completely unheard of. It’s not that I don’t want him to have more success, I just fear that the fickle citizens of the world won’t appreciate him, but will follow him because their best friend is obsessed with how cute he is, or for whatever reason. I’m not saying that if it does come to a time where tickets have $50 price tag, it won’t be because he hasn’t earned it, because ultimately talent is what gets you there and keeps you there, and he’s not lacking in that department. I don’t think that is something that could be circumvented if he were to get huge, because I believe that people as a whole tend to make things less, you know? They’ll take something special and turn it into just another thing. Needless to say, I don’t want that happening.
Basically, I’d like for him to not get huge. I just want something that’s good to stay good, and I don’t think that’s selfish. Idealistic, maybe, but not selfish.
If anyone disagrees or doesn’t know what the hell I’m talking about, let me know.

I COMPLETELY agree with you.
I love his music, and I have ever since his EPs and Songs We Sing. He creates some of the most beautiful music I’ve heard in a long time. So yeah, I wish him success, but I wish he wouldn’t become overrated. I don’t think going mainstream is a very Matt Costa-esque thing to do… He just seems really low-key and chill. I love that he plays at small venues. It makes the concert experience more personal, and the crowd really gets to experience greatness!

In the beggining when I started going to see Matt play shows, somewhere around 2003 around Southern California, he was doing his solo thing and performing for free throughout College Campuses and small venues. I must have gone to 30 shows before I even spent a dime and the shows were epic and I often wondered myself how it would be like once he reached the level he is at now. Much like a school girl crush, I chased him around from farmers markets to school cafeterias…absorbing his music and wishing that one day more people would eventually get a chance to listen to such a new sound. I hope matt gets bigger and badder and rules the world. Cheers!

Yeah i think that brushfire brings in guys who love the music and know who they play for, like many of you, i hope Matt doesn’t get to big headed, don’t think it’ll happen though, he seems pretty level headed

a man must consume mass amounts of marijuana and alcohol to stay level headed. Deep thought #928 from the stoners bible

Ha. So you’re agreeing that he’s level headed?
You sincerely and nobly want the to let the world enjoy Matt’s stuff while the rest of us are sitting here whining like children. You seem level headed, too.

YEs mother nature. I want the whole world to find the courage to listen to matt ...and to smoke some weed and enlighten up…..(I am not high right now, and have no excuse for not making sense)

The only part that doesn’t make sense is “mother nature.”
and when I said you seemed level headed, I wasn’t referencing your deep thought, I just meant that you were level headed. I was referencing the deep thought when talking about Matt’s level head, though.
