I asked him about the line in Cold December… “Swallowing glass just to stay pure”. He told me he’d rather I stay curious about that one. I can only imagine, if that’s really what MM is about. Any insight on that one, Fretless? haha
I’ve wondered about the swallowing glass line for a while, and I literally cannot figure out what it means, or even come close. And my degree is in this sort of thing (english/literary analysis). I guess I fail at my degree….? And of course he would say that. I hate when they do that/love it at the same time. I just want to sit down with him, have a beer, and say, “OK, go. Tell me EVERYTHING. Or ANYTHING.”
I think you have to take the line before it - “I have not failed to be, what you’d expect of me” He went above and beyond to please this person, sort of like, “I did everything you asked me to. Even if it was ridiculous and crazy and no sane person would attempt it, I still did it FOR YOU. And now I’m freezing in the lonliest winter because you’re heading up north and… it’s December and it’s cold, dammit.”
Yeah, so I went a little far at the end there, but you get the idea. Also, there is this lyrics website and someone said something like, “OMG this MUST mean he’s doing crystal meth!” I read that, I really did. Aren’t people just nutty sometimes?

I totally read that too! I laughed because I never fails for someone to read to deeply into somehting and associate it somehow with drugs…

haha sounds kind of tricky because of what he said to you…
but I always had the thought of this as the meaning: glass…is so pure, right? so adding on a little metaphoricle twist to it would be “swallowing something pure to become/stay pure”...swallowing glass to just stay pure

I think of it as sort of a mix of what you and dizzy say, its so ridiculous to swallow glass but the “reasoning” is that glass is pure so you would, like alohahemp said, become/remain pure

I’m with what you are all saying (well, almost all of you)...but to add a whole new twist to this conversation, is it also possible that he’s being literal about being “pure”? that the girl and/or he is a virgin and she wants to stay that way, and the whole song is him struggling with that idea. he has to stay pure, or at least loyal, to her, and he wants to succeed (not fail to be what she expects), so he does everything he can for her…and he’s waiting…and preparing…but she never gives in…so he feels like he’s swallowing glass (painful), to stay pure for her.
just a thought. in the end, I think it’s all of these things and none of them at the same time.
