musical roots?

So, I was just watching Rushmore (can’t believe I never saw this in high school when it came out), and at some point I heard a song, and it totally reminded me of Josephine.

It was Nothing in This World by the Kinks, of course.

Now, they don’t *really* sound alike, except for that line about “I found out…” But I still got excited.

This is what I love about Matt’s music- how it always seems to reference other music (not that I know that this Kinks song actually influenced Josephine). Of course, I guess all music influences other music, but with Matt I just feel like ... he gets so excited about music, and that really comes out in his own work…or something. Sorry, I can’t figure out exactly what I’m trying to say here.

Anyway, just wanted to share that randomness. I’m sort of obsessed with the idea of musical roots, so, yeah.

great timing for this post. Someone once recommended Rushmore , but then I fotgot all about it.
As it happens, it’s on this weekend, looking forward to it.

I have this weird thing, when I hear someone new or a song- I instantly think of a few other artists and songs it’s directly or indirectly connected to.

I was actually writing about my personal musical roots (I’m not a musician) how I came to like what I like and where I got it from etc. It was really really long so decided to work ona visual map instead.

I love finding new music form soundtracks-

Rushmore’s soundtrack is pretty awesome, as I think all of Wes Anderson’s soundtracks are.

I love the idea of music being kind of like literature, that there are stories and references to people and events, and universal themes, that get passed along from generation to generation. And when you see the connection of the music, you realize how we as people, and as a culture, are all connected- everyone, living and dead.

And I love making visual maps! They’re really good for stuff like that.
