hey guys, I’m John and I’m new here but was wondering whats a good album someone recommended to you? Mine is Delta Spirit’s Ode to Sunshine album my friend from umgd recommended to me. Has anyone listened to it? I really like their song Trashcan that’s on their imeem.com/deltaspirit page and the video for their album at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-ocDGg-8eY is pretty awesome. I heard they opened for Matt but I wasn’t able to make it to see his performances. I hear they sound really good live though. anyone here really like their music like I do? so what’s a good album someone recommended to you?

Oh yes, DS was a lot of fun both times I saw them open for Matt. I’m bummed that they’re just cruising past the Bay Area this fall but I’m sure there will be ample opportunity to see them.

There are a ton of folky groups that I’ve been recommended that I would also say “listen to now!” (Fionn Regan, Hem, the Wailin’ Jennys, Clare Burson, Chris Seefried, Joe Purdy, to name a few), but there are two not-so-folky albums that I acquired in the last year that I’ll mention specifically.

1) “Pretty. Odd.” by Panic at the Disco really impressed me because of how different it was from their first album, which was fun, but it wasn’t anything great. This, on the other hand, shows a tremendous amount of growth and development in their songwriting, and they demonstrate that they are not only capable of one sound. Actually, they could probably be described as “all over the place,” like Matt sometimes is. Specific tracks to listen to are, I would say, “She Had the World,” “Northern Downpour,” “When the Day Met the Night,” and “Folkin’ Around.”

2) “Armchair Apocrypha” by Andrew Bird. I’d only been familiar with his stuff with Bowl of Fire (also very cool if you’re into the Gypsy jazz-type stuff (which I am)), so to hear his solo stuff was jarring at first because it’s totally different. I was actually specifically recced “Mysteryious Production of Eggs,” and I like it, but I LOVE “Armchair Apocrypha.” All of it.

Also, Xavier Rudd owns my soul. Or part of it. A smaller part than Matt owns, I guess. But a part nonetheless.

i just recently got armchair apocrypha by andrew bird and love it! i also love the mysterious production of eggs, but im not sure which one i like more, i think i have to listen to them more.

yes! xavier rudd is great. a friend recommended his music a while back and i bought a few songs off itunes. this summer i found his first cd and bought that. dark shades of blue recently came out and its a totally new direction but i absolutely love it!

i went to a concert this past weekend that i really enjoyed. i was going for rogue wave but they couldnt make it becasue the lead singer, zach, got a serious back injury. i was really bummed since i paid all that money just to see them but the concert was really good. so i would recommend these bands:
alkaline trio-agony & irony (apparently people werent liking it cause they went in a new direction but i think its really great. the songs will be stuck in your head all the time.
does it offend you, yeah?-theyre pretty electronicy so if your not into that you might not like it but you should give it a try
the kooks-friends had actually given me both of their albums but i only listened to them a couple times. after the concert ill definitely be listening more
flogging molly-theyre very irish, not the music i would typically listen to but i really like it after seeing them live. i think it was teh whole atmosphere though that made me like them, people were definietly having the most fun when they played.

wow. that was really long. but theyre all worth checking out.

Architecture in Helsinki - Places Like This. It came out awhile ago, but they’re totally off the wall and consequently amazing. You’ll be dancing.

Oh, it’s cool. Not like I’ve ever danced to Architecture, or Matt Costa himself for that matter…

Yeah you should see me when “Cigarette Eyes” comes on…. Dance par-tayyyyy.

Nobody recommended this so much as my parents own it, and I listen to it a lot, but Stephane Grapelli and Django Reinhardt are amazing, obviously, and now I am recommending them to you all. Also, Joe Purdy’s “Julie Blue” album, and pretty much any and all Ray LaMontagne. My best friend also “tricked” me into liking Hanson by playing “Underneath Acoustic Live” without telling me what it was. It’s just them with the bare essentials—guitars, pianos, and of course, a shaker and a tambourine. Gotta have a shaker and a tambourine—and it really shows their knack for harmonies really well.

yeah that’s a good album, heart it races is my favourite, the tribal feel and the film clip for hold music is so cool.

xavier rudd’s food in the belly- i just really like the didge in Mana and the mother is a good song too

the beautiful girls learn yourself record is also a goodie- freedom features mason jennings and i just love every song on that album. they have sort of moved to a more rockier vibe now though, but they are still awesome :)

coldplay a rush of blood to the head—

Heart it Races is definitely in my top three favorites from Places Like This…I also really love Underwater and Like It or Not.  You’ve seen the video for heart it races, yeah? That is an extremely cool video.

I would also like to add two artists into the mix.

1) Akron/Family. A friend of mine recently informed me about them. If I remember correctly they’re a family of musicians out of Akron, Ohio. They have a very…down-home-folk-rock sort of feel. I have no idea where you can get their record, but you can find a lot of their stuff on http://www.projectplaylist.com. Their song Ed is a Portal is really, really good.

2) Page France. This is one of my favorite bands. You can find some fanmade videos on youtube, I think…some of their stuff is on projectplaylist, and some of their stuff is on myspace.  They kind of a have new-folk-pop vibe…and they are also very good.
