Pittsburgh Show -loooong review

I was gonna wait until tomorrow to write this, but figured it’d be fresher in my mind if I just wrote it out now.

Matt and the boys played at Diesel, which is a small lil venue, maybe around 200 people?  I’m just guessing.  But it was a welcome change, since the last time I saw him in NYC in two much bigger and sold out venues.  There was a pretty mixed crowd, and they were really tame.

I got the written setlist from Harris (afterward, I asked Matt to sign it and he wrote “God Bless, Matt Costa”, gotta love him)...anyway, the setlist was not very accurate, so here’s my best guess.

Ballad of Miss Kate
Trying to Lose My Mind
Sweet Thursday
Vienna
Mr Pitiful (the microphone dropped at the beginning, so he had to start again)
Behind the Moon
The Road (The Road isn’t written on the setlist, but he played it…I just don’t remember when exactly)
Josephine (also not written on the setlist, and I definitely have no idea when he played it)
Cigarette Eyes
Sunshine (with Mole in the Ground as the intro, except he played more of it than I’ve ever heard, and it sounded awesome)
Astair
Miss Magnolia
Sweet Rose
Emergency Call
————-
(the setlist says Yellow Taxi, but he didn’t play it)
Never Looking Back (wasn’t written on the setlist, but he made me very very very happy by playing this one)
COCAINE (well, he tried, anyway.  He played the opening and sang about 3 lines, then stopped and said he couldn’t remember the words so he’d play something else.  When I talked to him after the show, he tried to sing a little bit more of it, and said that he wrote it just a week and a half ago…but I swear I’ve heard about this song, has it been mentioned somewhere?  He said he sang it on a radio program or something last week?  I don’t know.  I’m sure it will show up on YouTube soon enough).
Cold December
Will I Lie In Your Arms Again (so fun!)

This was probably the best Matt Costa show I’ve seen.  I told Matt that I was mad at him after the Bowery show because he was so drunk/wasted, but that he definitely redeemed himself tonight.  I was really happy with the setlist, and they sounded fantastic.  He played a lot of new or unreleased stuff, so that was super fun.  Except, no Manic Man, which I like to hear live.

I talked to Harris before the show, and briefly after.  He’s a cool guy.  He said Matt and maybe Mitch are going on tour with Oasis through Canada, after the current tour schedule.  I also told Matt that he should tour with No Doubt next year.  That would be awesome.  He was all for it, too.

After the show, a girl proposed to Matt with a big funky ring.  I’m not sure if he said yes or not, but he kept the ring.

A few years ago, a guy named Costa was running for Sheriff, so a guy brought Matt a big Costa for Sheriff sign.  He said he held onto the sign for 2 years for Matt.  That’s devotion.  Maybe Matt should marry that guy instead.

Alright, enough.

Sounds like a great show!
Personally I’d like to see him tour with Donovan and/or Devendra Banhart instead of Oasis or No Doubt.

Great Review, and thanks for writing this.  I was also at the show (my first time seeing Matt live) and I was blown away!  I thought he was amazing.  Thanks for the set list info as well, I LOVED when he played The Road and Astair together. I had never heard The Road before and was dying to know what it was.  Your list helped me figure it out and I just got it from I-Tunes yesterday.  I can’t stop listening to it.  haha Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for writing this.

whoa, another fan from pittsburgh!  I never thought I’d see the day.

Glad to help.  The Road is a beautiful song.

did you get to talk to Matt or any of the band after the show?  did you propose to him?  haha.

SIGH~  No, I’m a complete chicken!!!!!  :(  I could just CRY.  I was standing right by there the entire time he was talking to everyone.  I kept looking… wanting to go over.  I even caught a glance from him once or twice.  I am a HUGE fan and was dying to give him a hug.  What’s wrong with me!  Haha God do I regret it now.  I’m not very good at talking when I’m so nervous and I was too afraid I’d make a complete ass out of myself (Like I did when I met Seth Avett of The Avett Brothers) haha.  But I deeply regret it now. Oh, and I would propose to him ANY DAY but no, that was not me. Haha

Anyway! What an AMAZING show. I LOVE HIM!  I loved seeing him there and loved that it wasn’t jam packed.  Thanks again for your review post, I really enjoyed reading it~

PS.  Did you get any pictures?  That was my other mistake - I left my camera in the car. I do believe if I had it on me, I would have gone over for a picture.

If you took any at the show I’d love to see them. :)

no, I didn’t get any pictures…with the fancy internet these days, if I need a picture of him, I can find it online.  I prefer to enjoy the show without worrying about taking pictures.  Plus, my camera doesn’t like dark environments.

You definitely should have went up and talked to him.  I don’t recommend proposing to someone you just met (actually, I’m more of a traditionalist, the guy should be doing the proposing…unless you are a guy as well…in which case, you’re in the wrong state for a marriage anyway)  But yeah, he’s totally cool, and really the only way you could embarass yourself is by doing something weird like proposing or giving him a doll you made or something…otherwise, you’ll be fine.
